We’re defenseless against manipulation. The circulation of fake news is growing rapidly with no checks and balances in place. This has rendered our democratic society largely defenseless against malevolent influence by bad actors.

The impact is real. Events such as the war in Ukraine and the COVID-19 pandemic have shown how strongly disinformation can manipulate public opinion and how directly it impacts people’s lives.
